Real World Tours - Public cruises and guided walks in the threatened Colne Valley. Come and see the beautiful Wetlands nature reserves that remain on our doorstep. 

Selected Sundays: tours start at Swan and Bottle Uxbridge at 12noon. Return by 3.30pm

Passengers are welcome to bring refreshments and drinks. Complimentary Teas and Coffee available on board.

Arthur Daily Trips is a skippered passenger boat, set up to take people to experience and enjoy the NATURE RESERVES of the GRAND UNION CANAL in Hillingdon, London. The unique Colne Valley has given people pleasure and provided water, wildlife and wonders to countless generations. In 2020 it is severely under threat from HS2 at the same time people are protecting and recording the natural world here. Come and see for yourself.

Our professional & friendly crew aim to introduce more people to the historic beauty of the canal and river system. 

Stretching from the days of the industrial revolution right through to the here and now; this resource NEEDS CHERISHING AND PROTECTING.

Your Journey

Cowley Lock (Built 1795) (Malt Shovel Pub) to The Fox Pub - 

Single Trip 7 miles & 8 Locks

Round Trip 14 miles & 16 Locks

 

We will be travelling South. This stretch, which is part of the main line Grand Union Canal, in the past played an important link between Brentford (one of the Ports of London) and the North. 

 

A member of our crew will be on hand to inform and delight with the history of the Grand Union Canal  

                 

We will take you up and down the Hanwell Flight (8 Locks and 2 miles) A truly dramatic and exciting experience. Everyone loves going into Locks and hearing the history of why and how and who created the Locks and the Canal network.

 

We will turn just by The Fox Pub, which is situated close to the Canal at the bottom of the Hanwell Flight. 

Hanwell is situated:

  • 2 miles from the Thames access at Brentford Gauging Lock

  • Wonderful walks in surrounding area - Osterley Park, Syon Park and Kew across the River Thames.

  • Places of interest and Eateries including the Fox Pub

One Way Journey time - 3 hours approximately

We have not run this as a Public Trip but I personally have done this trip numerous times, it is Wonderful and incredibly interesting


We supply Tea & Coffee for no charge and you are also welcome to bring your own picnic/snacks with drinks for your journey.

Your Journey

The Grand Union Canal starts to climb up into the Colne Valley and the Chiltern Hills. Passing Uxbridge Lock, we continue northwards to Denham and across Harefield Moor. A stretch of common ground of considerable interest to naturalists.

We experience Denham Deep Lock, which is one of the deepest locks on the Grand Union.  A rise and drop of 11ft 11 inches.

We continue further into the Colne Valley through a landscape which contains woods, mills and lakes. We will turn at Harefield Marina, just below Widewater Lock.

During the trip we will moor and explore the Rich Habitat of the Colne Valley, so bring your sketch books and cameras to record your visit.

With Sarah and Niki helping you identify and spot all the richness of the area. Viewings insects, trees, plants & birds.

All viewings will be recorded and sent for official acknowledgement to the GIGL (Green Space Information of Greater London)

Cowley Lock to Bulls Bridge - 8.5 miles 2 Locks

A Fascinating and Historical journey from 1801 to 1944 to 2019


Your Journey - takes approximately 2.5 hours


Heading  South towards The River Thames we enter  Cowley Lock which is the beginning/end of the 27 mile pound. 


At Cowley Peachey Junction, the 5 miles Slough Arm branches off to the west in an almost straight line. Built as late as 1882 (one of the last canals to be built in Britain)


We continue on the main line and at Bridge 192 the canal passes the site of Colham Wharf, originally constructed 1796, subsequently replaced by Harriet House since replaced Drayton Wharf.


We turn around at the Paddington Arm and the Grand Union at Bulls Bridge.

This was once a large British Waterways Yard and formerly the Grand Union Canal Carrying Fleet Depot. Key in 1944 in moving  steel & coal. The Boat Families worked alongside the Tiller Girls, who where employed by the Grand Union Canal Company, interesting times.


Heading North towards Birmingham and beyond, we pass The Paddington Packet Boat that ran daily from Paddington to Cowley.

It was one of the few passengers boats plying regularly along the Grand Junction Canal. It was pulled by 4 horses and had precedence over all  other boats.

Covering a 15 mile lock free run in a time remarkable at the beginning of the 19thc.

 

 

Cream Tea Cruise - 2 hour trip

with as many Teas and Coffees you desire.

The Grand Union Canal starts to climb up into the Colne Valley and the Chiltern Hills. Passing Uxbridge Lock, we continue northwards to Denham and across Harefield Moor, a stretch of common ground of considerable interest to naturalists.

Your cruise is a 3 hour trip from Swan & Bottle, Uxbridge to South Harefield.

We travel north as the Grand Union Canal continues to rise. 2 Locks with Denham Deep being one of the deepest Locks on the network, rising/falling 11ft 11". You will be travelling in the beautiful Colne Valley, a landscape of interesting contrasts, containing woods, mills,lakes and rivers adjoining the Canal.

Nature in abundance especially in Spring & Summer.

Arthur is a purpose built replica of a 1935 passenger boat built to fulfill all our customers needs 

  • We have no maximum time just a minimum of 2 hours. Our hourly rate is the first hour is £100 then subsequent per hour of £70. For private bookings

  • Bad weather is not a problem on Arthur as you can sit very comfortably inside and look out the Glass Windows. 

  • The Maximum we can carry is 12 persons, which number wise doesn't include our team of Skipper and Crew.

  • You can bring your own food and drinks for no charge, or we can order food and drinks on your behalf (can provide menu on request) and arrange a direct delivery to Arthur.

  • We operate a bio degradable policy on plastics. if you can accommodate that would be much appreciated or as much as you can, thank you.

At this point you can disembark or pre order to consume on the boat, for Tea & Cakes at Black Jack Mills Cafe, a former water-mill between the River Colne and the Grand Union Canal.
